Mission Statement
The mission of the Colchester Information Literacy and Technology Program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. The school Library Media Specialist and Technology Specialist empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information.
Media Class
Media classes meet once per week for 40 minutes, as part of the specials schedule. Students will learn to use devices, like iPads and Chromebooks, to learn and share what they learned with others. Students also participate in activities to learn some foundational coding skills.
Book Checkout
Students come with their class for book checkout once a week. During this time, students browse books in the non-fiction and fiction sections using a shelf marker. In our library books are genrified so that students can locate books of interest independently based on picture signage throughout the library.

Throughout the year, students are introduced to STEAM using the Engineering Design Process- Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Test, and Improve. Through purposeful play, tinkering, and creating, students learn to solve real world problems connected to the curriculum.
Steam
STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. The difference is that arts are included, ranging from visual arts, language arts, and physical arts to music and more. STEAM focuses on sparking imagination and creativity through the arts in ways that naturally align with STEM learning.
Stem
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The need for STEM programming in education developed out of concern that future generations were lacking the critical skills needed to succeed in the current and future economy. STEM programming teaches innovation, creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration among many other skills proven to lead to success.
